About 1.6 million people now live in nursing homes in the United States. Thirty years from now, it's expected to be 5 million. Many patients are at risk because one out of four nursing homes every year is cited for causing death or serious injury to a resident, according to government figures.
A 2001 United States congressional report found that over 30 percent of the nursing homes in the United States were cited between January 1999 and January 2001 for an abuse violation that caused harm. Over 2,500 of the violations were serious enough to cause actual harm or to place residents in immediate jeopardy of death or serious injury. The abuses were physical, sexual and verbal. All abuse is on the rise: more than twice as many nursing homes were cited for abuse in 2000 than in 1996. In 1996, 5.9 percent of all nursing homes were cited for an abuse violation during their annual inspections; in 2000, 16 percent of nursing homes were cited.
Nursing home abuse and neglect has become widespread and is a growing problem. It is a serious issue affecting thousands of nursing home residents who are dependent on nursing homes for care. Abuse and neglect can be difficult to recognize and are often covered up by nursing home staff.
