lies along the west bank of the lovely Rappahannock
River, within the dynamic Richmond
Metropolitan Area. Richmond, VA is 45 miles outside of
Essex County on the opposite shore of the Rappahannock River.
Located in the Middle
Peninsula of VA, Essex County consists of more than 260
square miles of beautiful landscape. According to the 2000
Census, Essex County is home to nearly 10,000 residents,
2,820 of which reside in Tappahannock.
Designated as an independent city, Tappahannock is Essex
County’s only incorporated city.
Tappahannock is a history-rich community that is
considerably older than well-known historic cities such as Fredericksburg,
Richmond
and Williamsburg.
The Rappahannock River played the primary role in establishing
Tappahannock, originally called “Hobbs His Hole”, as a
thriving city. Thirteen of the city’s original buildings and
homes currently lie within Tappahannock’s Historic Landmark
District.

routes 17 and 360 make the area the retail trades center for
nearly 90,000 people.

River is an easily navigable waterway that provides
convenient access to the stunning Chesapeake
Bay and to its ports and tributaries. Its proximity to
these bodies of water provides numerous opportunities for
business and recreation. Residents and visitors enjoy boating,
fishing and swimming in the warmer months. Throughout the
year, the scenic shores provide the ideal backdrop for civic
events, parades and festivals such as the annual Rivahfest.
Held each June in Tappahannock, Rivahfest is an exciting
community celebration with arts, antiques, boat displays, live
entertainment and rides.
Several local parks and public recreation facilities

golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts and racquetball
