John C. "Jack" Gould has been practicing law since 1978, focusing his practice in plaintiff's personal injury and criminal defense.

Upon graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975, he received his J.D. in 1978 from the University of Richmond. He served for one year as a Law Clerk to the United States District Court, Eastern District of Virginia. From 1979 to 1983, he was an Associate of Marks, Stokes & Harrison, and in 1983 became a partner in that firm. In 1986, Jack left private practice when he was elected Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Hopewell. From 1990 to 1995 he also served as the City Attorney for Hopewell. In March 2000, he resigned as Commonwealth's Attorney to rejoin Marks & Harrison.
