& Harrison was founded in 1911 by David A. Harrison, Jr.
It has continued its practice uninterrupted since that
time.
For three generations our attorneys have represented the
families of Virginia.
The Firm currently has 18 attorneys and a staff of over 70.
It limits its practice to representation of those injured in
personal injury, workers' compensation and
social security
disability matters in
Richmond and throughout VA. Marks & Harrison has represented
thousands of injured victims in all types of claims and has
successfully tried or negotiated thirteen cases between a
million dollars and twelve million dollars.
Two members of Marks & Harrison served in the Virginia
House of Delegates as Chairman of the House Courts
of Justice Committee and as Chairman of the Corporation
Insurance and Banking Committee. Two members of the Firm have
served as Commonwealth's Attorneys and one as an Assistant
Commonwealth's Attorney. One served as mayor of Hopewell.
Members of the Firm have gone on to serve as Circuit Court and
Juvenile Court judges and as substitute judges. Members of the
Firm have been both a City Attorney and a County Attorney.
Among the ranks of Marks & Harrison is a former Supreme
Court law clerk and a federal court law clerk. The Firm has
members who are fellows of the Roscoe Pound Institute and Trial
Lawyers for Public Justice, and who serve on the faculty of
the Virginia College of Trial Advocacy. Two members of Marks
& Harrison have been invited to be members of the American
Board of Trial Advocates. One has been selected for inclusion
in Best Lawyers in America in Plaintiff's Personal Injury.
Two have been named Legal Elite by Virginia Business
Magazine. Three have been named SuperLawyers by Law and
Politics.
Marks & Harrison is the only Firm whose members have
received the three most distinguished awards of the Virginia
Trial Lawyers Association. Among their ranks have been a
former President, a recipient of the Distinguished Service
Award and a recipient of the Courageous Advocate Award of
the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. No other firm has
been so honored. Two members currently serve on the New
Lawyers Division Board of Governors. Its members also serve on
committees of the American Association for Justice and on the Board of the Southern Trial
Lawyers Association.
In addition to the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association,
members of Marks & Harrison have served in positions of
leadership with the Virginia Bar Association including on
its Committee on Nominations to the Supreme Court of
Appeals. One of its members served as a member of the 1944
Virginia Constitutional Convention. The Firm has members who
currently serve on the Boyd-Graves Conference of the Virginia
Bar Association. One of its attorneys has served as trial
counsel for the Virginia Transportation Commission in
condemnation cases.
Attorneys at Marks & Harrison have served as lawyers
for the County of Chesterfield, the Richmond School Board, the
Hopewell School Board and the Richmond Redevelopment and
Housing Authority. Marks & Harrison lawyers have defended cases for
State Farm Insurance Company, Home Insurance Company,
The Virginia Farm Bureau and
Colonial Insurance Company.
Attorneys at Marks & Harrison have been active in the work
of the Virginia State Bar including serving on several District Committees, on its Young Lawyer
Conference, and on the Standing Committee on Lawyer
Advertising and Solicitation.
Lawyers at Marks & Harrison have been president of the
Petersburg Bar Association, the Hopewell Bar Association,
the Sixth Circuit Bar Association, Central Virginia Legal Aid
Society, Southside Virginia
Legal Services, Inc., and one of Marks & Harrison's attorneys
has been a faculty member of the Virginia State Bar's
Professionalism Course. Members of the Firm have served on the
Judicial Council of Virginia and the Conference of Insurance
Legislators, have been certified by the National Board of
Trial Advocacy, and have been members of the Virginia College
of Criminal Defense Attorneys. One of its attorneys has served
as President of the Virginia Capital Resources Center.
Marks & Harrison members have served their community as
President of the Rotary Club and of two local chambers
of commerce, and have received the Jaycees' Distinguished
Community Service Award and the Outstanding Young Citizen
Award. The Firm supports the work of LINC, the Central
Virginia Legal Aid Society, the Jamestown-Yorktown
Foundation and the Lower James River Association. It has
sponsored a safety program with the Medical College of
Virginia for over ten years. Marks & Harrison
endows a scholarship for law students interested in a career
in personal injury at the T.C. Williams School of Law.
The Firm is one of the three largest specialized
personal
injury law firms in the state. It has on its staff a former
claim adjuster, and three investigators-one who served as a
state trooper and two with local police departments.
