Richmond, Virginia Vehicle Accident and Defective Equipment Lawyers
In early 2010, Toyota took unprecedented measures to address the sudden, uncontrolled acceleration in some of its cars by halting the sale and production of eight Toyota models. The problem, according to information posted on Toyota's website, is that "there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position."
The action by the carmaker comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received numerous reports of sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles. In a written statement, the NHTSA said its records show that at least 15 people died in crashes related to possible sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles made in 2002 or later. That compared with only 11 similar deaths in vehicles made by all other automakers.

On January 21, 2010, Toyota announced a recall of approximately 2.3 million vehicles equipped with a specific pedal assembly. The car manufacturer also suspended sales of the eight models involved in the recall on January 26.
Models affected by Toyota announcement are the 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon. Also affected are certain models of the 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra and 2008-2010 Sequoia.
If you are driving a defective model and experience sudden acceleration, take the following steps:
- Depress the brake pedal with both feet using firm and steady pressure. Do not pump the brake pedal.
- Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position, continue using the brakes and pull off the road.
- Turn off the engine.
- Contact your Toyota dealer.
