John grew up in Hanover County and attended Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, VA. After graduating from Virginia Tech, he went directly into law school and graduated from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond.  John Worked as a legal assistant for 4 years while he was attending school. He was also a clerk for Judge Melvin R. Hughes in the Circuit Court of the City of Richmond.
