Marks & Harrison was founded in 1911 by David A. Harrison, Jr. It has continued its practice uninterrupted since that time. For over three generations our attorneys have represented the families of Virginia.
Marks & Harrison limits its practice to personal injury, workers’ compensation, and social security disability matters. The firm has represented thousands of injured victims in all types of claims.
Two members of Marks & Harrison served in the Virginia House of Delegates and were Chairman of the House Courts of Justice Committee and Chairman of the Corporation, Insurance, and Banking Committee. Two members of the Firm have served as Commonwealth’s Attorneys and one as anAssistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. One served as mayor of Hopewell. Members of the Firm have gone on to serve as Circuit Court and Juvenile Court judges and substitute judges. Members of the Firm have been City and County Attorneys.
Among the ranks of Marks & Harrison have been a former Supreme Court law clerk and a federal court law clerk. A member of the Firm serves on the faculty of the Virginia College of Trial Advocacy. Two members of Marks & Harrison have been invited to be members of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Two have been selected for inclusion in the 2012 edition of Best Lawyers in America in Plaintiffs Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs for Richmond. Several are listed as Super Lawyers. One is a Best Lawyer in Workers Compensation.
Marks & Harrison is the only firm whose members have received the three most distinguished awards of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. Among our lawyers have been a former President, a recipient of the Courageous Advocate Award, and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. No other Virginiafirm has been so honored. Its members also serve on committees of the American Association for Justice and on the Board of the Southern Trial Lawyers Association.
Additionally, members of Marks & Harrison have served in positions of leadership with the Virginia Bar Association, including its committee on Nominations to the Supreme Court of Appeals. One of its members served as a member of the 1944 Virginia Constitutional Convention. The Firm has members who currently serve on the Boyd-Graves Conference of the Virginia Bar Association.
Attorneys at Marks & Harrison have served as lawyers for the County of Chesterfield, the Richmond Company, Hartford Insurance Company, Virginia Farm Bureau, Progressive Insurance Company, and Colonial Insurance Company.
Attorneys at Marks & Harrison have been active in the work of the Virginia State Bar including serving on several District Committees, on its Young Lawyer Conference, and on the Standing Committee on Lawyer Advertising and Solicitation, and as Chair of the Special Committee on Access to Legal Services.
Lawyers at Marks & Harrison have been President of the Petersburg Bar Association, the Hopewell Bar Association, the Sixth Circuit Bar Association, Central Virginia Legal Aid Society, and Southside Virginia Legal Services, Inc. One of Marks & Harrison’s attorneys has been a faculty member of the Virginia State Bar’s Professionalism Course. Members of the Firm have served on the Judicial Council of Virginia and the Conference of Insurance Legislators, have been certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and have been members of the Virginia College of Criminal Defense Attorneys. One of its attorneys has served as President of the Virginia Capital Resources Center.
Marks & Harrison members have served their community as President of the Rotary Club and of two local chambers of commerce, and have received the Jaycees’ Distinguished Community Service Award, and the Outstanding Young Citizen Award. The Firm supports the work of LINC, the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, the Virginia Poverty Law Center, and the Lower James River Association. For over 20 years, it has sponsored a safety program with nurses from VCUMedical Center dealing with drinking and driving. Marks & Harrison endows a scholarship for law students interested in a career in personal injury law at the T. C. Williams School of Law
Our Firm is one of the largest personal injury law firms in the state. It has on its staff a former claims adjuster and three investigators, one of whom served as a state trooper and two who were with local police departments.
