Defective DePuy Hip Replacement Parts

If you have experienced trouble with an ASR hip-repair implant, you may be entitled to recover money for your pain and suffering as well as your medical bills and other related expenses.

On August 24, 2010, Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. unit recalled these hip replacement medical devices. Data showed that surgeons had to replace them at a rate more than twice the industry average, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Patients with the ASR hip replacement parts have experienced pain, difficulty walking, infection and damage to surrounding soft tissue.

If you are using Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Orthopedics ASR hip products and have had any of these health problems, you should consult an experienced Virginia defective medical device attorney at Marks & Harrison right away to learn about your right to compensation.

At Marks & Harrison, our defective medical products lawyers can provide you with a free, confidential and no-obligation consultation. Contact us today by calling toll free at 1-800-283-2202, submitting a Case Evaluation online or sending us an e-mail at lawyers@marksandharrison.com.

Patients With Hip Products May Need Revision Surgery

The recalled DePuy hip implant devices are the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. According to the Wall Street Journal, about 93,000 of these medical products were sold before the company phased out production last year.

Because the ASR hip-repair implants were believed to be stable and less prone to dislocations than other hip implants, the devices were commonly used to replace the ball-and-socket in hip joints in younger patients.

However, because they are made of metal, they may give off flakes, shavings and other metal debris that can damage soft issue near the device. Many patients with these hip replacement parts have complained of sharp pain, infections and dislocations.

Unpublished data shows that patients with the ASR hip replacement parts have needed expensive and risky revision surgery at a 12-13 percent rate within five years of the implant, which is significantly higher than the 5 percent industry average.
